LONDON — An all-British version of NBC's "Saturday Night Live" is coming next year, with show creator Lorne Michaels acting as executive producer, U.K. broadcaster Sky announced Thursday.
The show will be produced from London by Michaels' Broadway Video and Universal Television Alternative Studio’s U.K. production team and will feature "a star-studded line-up of hosts," the company said in a news release.
Sky is owned by Comcast, the parent company of NBCUniversal, which also owns NBC News.
The broadcaster said it will have the same “live, fast-paced style that has made the show a cultural phenomenon with iconic hosts, musical guests and a core cast of the funniest British comedians around.”
"The show has discovered and nurtured countless comedy and musical talents over the years," Cecile Frot-Coutaz, CEO of Sky Studios, said in the news release, adding that the show will be "all live from London on Saturday night."
Michaels will continue to executive produce the original U.S. version.
“SNL” celebrated its 50th anniversary in February, inviting past luminaries including Steve Martin, Bill Murray and Eddie Murphy to take part in a special edition.
Deadline reported in 2021 that a British “SNL” was in the works at Sky.
There have been short-lived versions of “SNL” in various countries in recent years, including Japan and Italy. The French version ran for only one episode, while the South Korean version remains on-air.
